When Ross’s personal needs suddenly changed, requiring the construction of a 600 square foot addition to his 1860’s home, there was no question that RAY-CORE SIPs were a “must have”.  This opportunity would allow Ross to experience the product at a different level, getting up-front and personal, not only through the construction phase, but ongoing, at a day-to-day basis.

As Ross walked his Otego property on a snowy December morning, he shared some of his experiences with the RAY-CORE SIP Panels.  One of the biggest concerns he had when putting on this sizable addition was the demands it would put on his relatively new HVAC system.  Ross was pleasantly surprised when his heating contractor informed him that, if anything, the existing system might now be larger than required for the home.  Removal of 20 feet of the old, 1800’s poorly insulated and leaky exterior wall, and replacing it with an additional 80 feet of airtight, superiorly-insulated SIP panels walls, would vastly improve the efficiency of the total structure.  Who would have thought that by adding square footage to a home, it would make a furnace so much more efficient, and actually reduce the overall heating costs?

“I appreciate your follow-up a couple months ago so see how the SIPs panels were performing. I did not want to give you an answer until we went through an entire summer and a winter.  Let me say one thing.  The SIPS panels are flat out AMAZING! 

We did do several things to ensure that we would have the most energy efficient home possible.   Number one, we live in Arkansas and the summers can run several degrees over a 100 for 40-60 days.  It’s hot and humid here.  Your a/c bill can kill you.  So we faced the home north and south and put no windows on the west wall.  We also did 3 foot overhangs to shade all the windows.  We built on a crawl space and blocked off all crawl space vents.  I ordered the Doug Rye “energy guy” video and tried to follow all his specs.  Our heating and air conditioning is all electric and we spent extra for the highest seer unit available at the time “I think it was a 17 seer”.  It is a zoned unit, so we have 5 zones.  This is to prevent heating and cooling the entire 6000 sq. foot home constantly.  Our media room and extra living quarters are in the attic space, (story and a half). 

So bottom line is we have a 6000 square foot home and we have not had one monthly electric bill over 350$.  Most months have been 180$-200$.  August was around 250$, and December and January was 300-350$.  Every one of my neighbors who has a larger home comparable to ours has been astonished when they see our electric bill.  My last home was 4500 sq. ft. and it ran close to 600$/month.

Bottom Line  

So bottom line is I’m the happiest guy in the country right now.  The only thing I wish I had done different is put SIPS panels on the roof of my home and put shingles over that.  Electric bill might be less than $100/month!”

New Jersey resident, Tom Kappeler needed a good solution for insulating the exposed beam vaulted ceiling that was to become the central feature of his new home, Tom wanted a product that would provide the most insulation possible, R-40 or better, in the least amount of space.  Searching Structural Insulated Panels SIPs on the internet took him to a long list of SIP panels manufacturers who produce the more commonly known “sandwich panel” style structural insulated panels.  Consisting of an insulating foam (generally polystyrene) with OSB glued to either side, Tom found this to be “overkill and overpriced” and didn’t like the idea that he would have to use insulation panels “12 inches thick to meet code requirements”.

With more than twenty years in the real estate industry as a broker, Stew served as the branch New Homes director for what was at that time the second largest Coldwell Banker franchise in the US.   Two decades later, Stew found himself assessing the needs of field workers involved in domestic energy exploration and found housing to be a real challenge.  Workers disliked living in the “man-camp” type of dwelling and they were looking for something better.  Needing housing that could easily be moved from one jobsite to another, these workers were looking for something self-contained, that could meet the extreme weather conditions while keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and that would be aesthetically pleasing – a place that they could call “home”.

RAY-CORE SIPs Made the Difference in Canada Passive House

SIPs Made the Difference.  When Reiner Hoyer set out on his project to build one of the most energy efficient homes in Toronto, little did he know the challenges that he would face.  Hours and hours of extensive research were required to find mostly new and innovative building practices and products that would provide the highest energy saving performance.  This brought “new-to-him” products such as RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Wall Panels otherwise known as SIPs.  Not a new product in the building market, as RAY-CORE has been around since the mid 80’s, but definitely new to Hoyer, he was excited to find such an amazing product to frame and super-insulate his new Passive Home.  RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels have simply taken conventional framing practices, utilizing wooden studs and polyurethane foam insulation and wrapped them with a radiant vapor barrier in a modular 4 foot wide panel.  Reiner chose the 7-1/4” staggered stud insulated wall panel with 2×6 studs on 12” centers,  offset to either side of the panel, providing a continuous insulation barrier that eliminates thermal drift.

Many of the products Reiner chose for his project were new technology, unfamiliar to local building officials and much of his time was spent educating. Familiarizing and providing information to these officials to obtain the necessary approvals.  Hoyer found this a bigger challenge than actually building the house.    In a recent article posted by, it was stated that Passive House practices for many contractors is a new thing, requiring “unique and careful processes”.   Reiner Hoyer stated that in his project, “I had to constantly coach every trade carefully at each step of the way.”

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

Some people say that a picture is worth a thousand words.  In Hoyer’s case, thermal imaging speaks volumes.  On January 2nd, Hoyer stepped outside with a special camera that captures an image based on the temperature of the object in front of it.  This image shows the objects temperature, demonstrated in colors from deep blue to deep red with the blue colors showing the coolest surfaces and red the hottest.  Variations from the spectrum  that include shades of greens, yellows and oranges reflect variations of temperature.  Take a look at this picture taken that cold Toronto January night.

It’s All In the Numbers

Super-insulating a house is of little value if there are voids that allow outside air to penetrate when the wind blows.  Sealing the envelope and air tightness is a step that is just as important when building an energy efficient house.  Homes, properly built with RAY-CORE SIP Panels, provide that necessary tightness.

Sealing the RAY-CORE SIPs with Foam, Caulk and Tape During Installation Ensures an Air-Tight Envelope

To ensure that the house was airtight and that nothing was missed, Reiner Hoyer performed a blower-door test to calculate the air leakage.  To perform this test, all windows and doors are closed, the house is equipped with monitors and the final opening is sealed as shown below with a fan installed to depressurize the house.  The result is a calculation of the number of air changes per hour (ACH) at a pressure of 50 pascals.  In simpler terms, a value of air leakage is determined.  The lower the number, the tighter the house.  If the number is too high, the builder can seek out places where air might be getting in and seal them to make the house tighter.

The blower-door test performed on Reiner Hoyer’s house, thanks to the endless steps taken to seal the house tight, passed with a .27 ACH @ 50.  This is 50% better than the European Passive House standard.  Reiner gives the German made Passive House windows and doors a lot of credit, along with the RAY-CORE Structural Insulated wall insulation and careful air sealing of all the joints.   If you would like to know more about blower door tests, visit Martin Holladay’s explanation on GreenBuildingAdvisor’s website
