SIP Panels Save Michigan Builder Money Month After Month

RAY-CORE SIP Panels caught the eye of Michigan builder Ross Menhart of RossMan Construction when in search of an insulation and framing solution to use in his construction of affordable, energy efficient homes.  RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Wall and Roof Panels, unique from the standard sandwich panel SIP, seemed to be the better solution and perfect fit for his mid-Michigan construction company.

Always “looking for ways to do things better”, RAY-CORE’s super insulating SIP Panels air-tight wall and roof systems appealed to Ross, as an affordable solution that would save both time, and resulting labor costs, during the construction of the home and money, in energy costs, for the lifetime of the home.

SIP Panels By RAY-CORE Menhart

Addition Designed Around SIP Panels by RAY-CORE

When Ross’s personal needs suddenly changed, requiring the construction of a 600 square foot addition to his 1860’s home, there was no question that RAY-CORE SIPs were a “must have”.  This opportunity would allow Ross to experience the product at a different level, getting up-front and personal, not only through the construction phase, but ongoing, at a day-to-day basis.

As Ross walked his Otego property on a snowy December morning, he shared some of his experiences with the RAY-CORE SIP Panels.  One of the biggest concerns he had when putting on this sizable addition was the demands it would put on his relatively new HVAC system.  Ross was pleasantly surprised when his heating contractor informed him that, if anything, the existing system might now be larger than required for the home.  Removal of 20 feet of the old, 1800’s poorly insulated and leaky exterior wall, and replacing it with an additional 80 feet of airtight, superiorly-insulated SIP panels walls, would vastly improve the efficiency of the total structure.  Who would have thought that by adding square footage to a home, it would make a furnace so much more efficient, and actually reduce the overall heating costs?

SIP Panels Addition Has No Ice Cycles!

As Ross’s walk and conversation with RAY-CORE were drawing to an end this cold winter day, with so much good to say about RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels he found it “hard to narrow it down to one simple statement.”   Approaching his home he couldn’t help but chuckle.  Ice cycles hanging from the roof of the old structure glistened in the early morning light.  Not a single one was found hanging from the snow covered roof of the new addition.  His words simply stated, “That’s really cool!”

RAY-CORE SIPs Panels Are Perfect Fit for Idaho Designer & Builder

SIPS Panels by RAY-CORE and Idaho Home Design

SIPs Panels by RAY-CORE Spec’d by Idaho Home Design in Southpoint 3724 Sq Ft, 5 Bedroom Home

RAY-CORE SIPs Panels are a perfect fit for Idaho Designer, Tanya Cromwell at Idaho Home Design and her partner Leland Jensen of Leland Jensen Construction.  With energy efficiency a foremost concern in all their homes, Leland Jensen believes that “meeting code isn’t enough.  We must go above and beyond the minimum code requirements.”  Their goal is to not only build a home that their customers will be comfortable in, but one that is energy efficient, lowering their energy bills and saving them money over the long term.  At their estimated 1% increase in construction costs compared to the overall cost of the home, Leland and Tanya find RAY-CORE SIPs to be an outstanding added value that will be easily made up by the homeowner in utility bills during the first couple of years they are in the home.  Lower utility bills mean overall lower monthly expenses, and that feels good.  But nothing compares to the comfort of living in a tight, super-insulated home built with RAY-CORE SIPs panels. And the benefits go far beyond insulation value.

SIPs Panels by RAY-CORE

Tanya touted the benefits of tight construction that are a result of the RAY-CORE SIPs panels.  “Clients have described how they cannot hear the wind in their home, and in Idaho Falls the wind blows a lot here!”  While speaking with one of their clients more recently, Tanya learned of a benefit she hadn’t thought of.  “We had a client that purchased a model home ask us why her home was so much quieter than their neighbors.”  Not aware of the special methods and materials that the house had been built with, which included RAY-CORE SIPs, the homeowner couldn’t imagine what would make such a difference.  This homeowner commented that her neighbors were all complaining about the construction noise in their new subdivision and she commented that she hadn’t even noticed. Once Tanya explained how the solid core exterior walls, consisting of RAY-CORE polyurethane foam SIPs panels, greatly diminished sound penetration, this homeowner was even more appreciative of her superior quality Leland Jenson Construction built home.

SIPs Panels by RAYCORE - Leland Jensen Construction

Finished Southpoint Home by Leland Jensen Construction Using RAYCORE Structural Insulated Panels

Leland commented on the simplicity of using RAY-CORE SIPs panels.  Intimidating at first to some new framers, “after a quick tutorial, our framer can construct a home with RAY-CORE SIPs as quickly as a stick built home.”  RAY-CORE takes the three construction steps of framing, installing vapor barrier and insulating and put them all into a single, energy and labor saving framing system.  With the utilization of RAY-CORE’s insulated headers, the substantial heat loss that traditionally occurs in that space is eliminated.  With Idaho temperatures ranging from 40 degrees F below zero in the winter, to 105 degrees F in the summer, Tanya remarked that “heating and cooling the homes here is a big deal!  RAY-CORE makes the building envelope much more efficient.”

RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels Claims Confirmed by Dow Test Home Study

RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels has been telling people since the mid ‘80s that building with their unique SIPs will save you money.  Dow’s first-year data from their five-year energy-efficiency study indirectly confirms this claim.

Structural Insulated Panels Homes by RAY-CORE

RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels Produce a Continuous Super Insulated, Super Airtight Fortress Against The Elements

In the fall of 2011 Dow teamed up with Cobblestone Homes in Midland, Michigan to build 12 energy efficient test homes, specifically designed to gather data regarding home energy efficiency based on whole-house insulation, air sealing and real-world living conditions.

Looking for a way to sell skeptical buyers on the idea that a small upfront investment in energy efficient construction can yield long-term energy (and money) saving results, Cobblestone Homes owner Mark Whal came up this this idea and pitched it to Dow.

The study includes 3 different homes of similar floor plans, and builds these homes to each of four different design and resulting energy standards.  These standards range from a baseline of the 2006 International Conservation Code to the exceeding the 2012 Energy Conservation Code.  Varying types and resulting varying R-value levels of insulation were used in each installation.  Materials included fiberglass insulation bats, spray polyurethane foam and Dow’s Styrofoam exterior continuous insulation.  Sensors in each home will provide important energy usage data over a five year period while the homes are used as rental properties.

With the intended purpose of this study is to gather important whole-house energy efficiency data, Jim Morey, residential market manager of Dow Building Solutions stated, “The results will enable builders to make a stronger case to homeowners and potential buyers that high-performance solutions can cost-effectively maximize home value and comfort while lowering homeownership costs.”

First-year data results show that building with continuous and closed-cell insulation shows a 30% improvement in air leakage over homes built to the 2006 standards using fiberglass batt insulation and conventional housewraps.

Homeowners and builders worrying that increased energy efficiency can only come with a extremely high cost, this study shows that with an investment of about $5,000, homeowners will receive a lifetime of energy cost savings.

So where does RAY-CORE’s Structural Insulated Panels fit into all this?  Although RAY-CORE was not included a part of this study, the outcome when utilizing the practices is the same.  Overall performance results when using RAY-CORE’s closed cell polyurethane foam SIP wall panels, and SIP roof panels with integrated vapor barrier, and coupled with their insulated headers, results in continuous super insulated, super airtight, fortress against the elements that would easily meet and most likely exceed the results found in this study.  And all this for even LESS than Cobblestone’s $5,000 upfront investment!

RAY-CORE SIPs Panels Homeowner is “Happiest Guy In the Country”

SIPs Panels the Answer!

When this Ozarks homeowner decided to build a new energy efficient home, he knew that it all would have to start with the insulation.  Searching for something better than conventional fiberglass insulation, when he found RAY-CORE SIPs Panels he knew that these insulation panels were just what he had been looking for, so he picked up the phone and called RAY-CORE.  Read what this happy customer has to say about his experience with RAY-CORE from start to finish and the homes overall heating and cooling performance…

Customer’s RAY-CORE SIPs Panels Experience

“I appreciate your follow-up a couple months ago so see how the SIPs panels were performing. I did not want to give you an answer until we went through an entire summer and a winter.  Let me say one thing.  The SIPS panels are flat out AMAZING!

We did do several things to ensure that we would have the most energy efficient home possible.   Number one, we live in Arkansas and the summers can run several degrees over a 100 for 40-60 days.  It’s hot and humid here.  Your a/c bill can kill you.  So we faced the home north and south and put no windows on the west wall.  We also did 3 foot overhangs to shade all the windows.  We built on a crawl space and blocked off all crawl space vents.  I ordered the Doug Rye “energy guy” video and tried to follow all his specs.  Our heating and air conditioning is all electric and we spent extra for the highest seer unit available at the time “I think it was a 17 seer”.  It is a zoned unit, so we have 5 zones.  This is to prevent heating and cooling the entire 6000 sq. foot home constantly.  Our media room and extra living quarters are in the attic space, (story and a half).

So bottom line is we have a 6000 square foot home and we have not had one monthly electric bill over 350$.  Most months have been 180$-200$.  August was around 250$, and December and January was 300-350$.  Every one of my neighbors who has a larger home comparable to ours has been astonished when they see our electric bill.  My last home was 4500 sq. ft. and it ran close to 600$/month.

Bottom Line

So bottom line is I’m the happiest guy in the country right now.  The only thing I wish I had done different is put SIPS panels on the roof of my home and put shingles over that.  Electric bill might be less than $100/month!”

Simply stated by this happy RAY-CORE customer, “We love ‘em and you all did great…shipping and follow-up and all!”

Insulated Panels Help Make WheelHaus RPTs Sustainable

Jackson Hole, Wyoming entrepreneur Jamie Mackay had a vision.  An owner of one of the Valley’s most luxury cabin resorts, Jamie has taken Recreational Park Trailers (RPTs) to the next level.  With a passion for sustainable building techniques, Jamie saw RAY-CORE’s energy saving insulated panels as a perfect fit.  With innovative design and a careful focus on space management, Jamie’s WheelHaus park model homes are the “next generation of RPTs”.

Finding a Solution

Searching for trailers to develop his Fireside Resort, situated in the shadows of the famous Jackson Hole Ski Resort, Jamie was looking for something different… something better. Unable to find a product that met his standards of durability, energy efficiency and clean living, he decided that he would build his own.

More Than a Trailer

Insulated Panels by RAYCORE Are Used by WheelHaus in Their RPTs
RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels are the Foundation of Wheelhaus’ Sustainable Building Techniques

WheelHaus has developed a product that is more than a trailer.  Designed for trailer parks of the future, these units are stylish and attractive, have a layout that is open, comfortable and energy efficient.  Not your typical structure when thinking of the term “green building”, but then again this isn’t your typical park model trailer.  Designed and built to LEED Gold standards and Certified Green, WheelHaus ensures a “healthier and more sustainable product.”

It’s All in the Details

WheelHaus RPTs and Insulated Panels by RAY-CORE

The Wedge by WheelHaus

Constructed of the highest quality materials, the RPT units start with a steel frame, top that with a durable, super-insulated structure made from RAY-CORE’s energy saving insulated panels. High r-value windows and doors finish off the envelop, sealing out the elements and keeping heating and cooling costs to a minimum.  The exterior siding, wood ceilings and skirting are all made from beautiful reclaimed Wyoming snow fencing.  Good air-quality is achieved through the use of low-VOC paints and wood floorings.  Energy Star appliances, low-flow fixtures and faucets and a high-efficiency gas fireplace reduce demand on energy and water resources

More than something good for the environment, Jamie envisioned  surroundings that would be comfortable and enjoyable with full-size living packed into 400 square feet.  The one bedroom unit include ample room for a king size bed and two nightstands, a built-in 4 drawer bureau, closet and desk.  The combination kitchen and dining room is both comfortable and functional with a mini-kitchen that includes a sink, two-burner cooktop, microwave, dishwasher and under counter refrigerator.  Concrete countertops and modern cabinetry add rustic style.  The large living room accommodates a full-size sofa, two ottomans and two side tables.  The full bath packs quality fixtures, a custom vanity with concrete top, quartzite floors and stone shower with glass doors.  To learn more about WheelHaus, visit their site at wheelhaus.com.

Search for Structural Insulated Panels Leads Homeowner to a Superiorly Insulated Home

Structural Insulated Panels For Vaulted Ceiling

New Jersey resident, Tom Kappeler needed a good solution for insulating the exposed beam vaulted ceiling that was to become the central feature of his new home, Tom wanted a product that would provide the most insulation possible, R-40 or better, in the least amount of space.  Searching Structural Insulated Panels SIPs on the internet took him to a long list of SIP panels manufacturers who produce the more commonly known “sandwich panel” style structural insulated panels.  Consisting of an insulating foam (generally polystyrene) with OSB glued to either side, Tom found this to be “overkill and overpriced” and didn’t like the idea that he would have to use insulation panels “12 inches thick to meet code requirements”.

Structural Insulated Panels by RAYCORE Kappeler
RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels – SIPs Wall Panels Quick and Easy Framing

Structural Insulated Panels by RAY-CORE Was the Answer

Tom was thrilled when he came upon RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels.  Utilizing polyurethane foam, integrated studs and a foil radiant vapor barrier, RAY-CORE is a different kind of structural insulated panel.  Tom was impressed by the whopping R26 insulation value RAY-CORE packs into their 3-1/2” panel and the impressive R42 achieved in the 5-1/2” panel.   Concerned about upfront costs, Tom ran the numbers and determined that if he went with spray foam, the added cost was far above the RAY-CORE panels.  Considering, as Tom put it “energy savings down the road and other cost savings immediately during construction… Insulation is done… Vapor barrier is done…”  and the benefits that come with basic sealing techniques to cut down air infiltration, RAY-CORE SIPs panels would be an affordable solution for both the walls and ceilings on this project.

Tom’s readers too are intrigued and impressed with RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels.  A simple product for both builders or Do-It-Yourself-ers, readers agree with Tom’s conclusions.  Doing a quick calculation “on the back of a napkin”, one poster found that “for a 2×6 wall with fiberglass bat[sic] (R-18) verses 2×4 Raycore panels (R-25)[sic] –(R-26)” put “Raycore panels at a competitive price for the same R-value of insulation”.   Considering the benefits of a lifetime of energy costs savings, many of Tom’s visitors now will utilize RAY-CORE SIPs for their next project.

RAY-CORE SIP Panels a Hit with “AARP Construction”

SIP Panels by RAY-CORE the Unquestionable Solution for Senior DIY ’er

Jens Noet decided to take on with the help of his friends the construction of his new Idaho retirement home.  As long-time “partners in (actually against) crime”, retired police officers Jens and Kevin went in search of new and innovative products to utilize in this project.  Researching structural insulated panels or SIPs, it was easy for them to see that RAY-CORE SIP Panels were far superior to sandwich panels SIPs and they liked the superior R-42 insulation value.  As novice builders with some “prior-life” framing experience, the decision was simple that RAY-CORE’s unique structural insulated panels were the perfect product for these Do-It-Yourself-ers.  Jens and Kevin were so excited to work with RAY-CORE’s SIP Panels that they wanted to share their experience by producing this video.  Just click below to see how easy the construction progressed!

How Did the RAY-CORE SIP Panels Project Go Jens?

When asked about the project, Jens stated that things went “even better than expected”.  Supposing the SIP panels to be easy to use, he states that “they were even easier to use and work with”… with simply “no negatives”.  Although some aspects of the project required some new or different techniques, the learning curve was simple and intuitive and the RAY-CORE structural insulated panels did not present any challenges.  Speaking specifically of the wiring, Jens stated that although the approach was a little different, “it went smoothly, quickly and was easy to do” not requiring “any more time than conventional methods”.

All in all, Jens and Kevin are thrilled with their experience with RAY-CORE’s structural insulated panels and are sharing their enthusiasm with others.  “It’s so solid”, says Jens in astonishment.   RAY-CORE SIP Panels “make things far more comfortable than a conventional home.”

Jens couldn’t speak more highly of his experience working with RAY-CORE’s knowledgeable staff.  “Bryan’s energy and enthusiasm for the product made working with RAY-CORE a pleasure.”  To find out more about the product, you can visit RAY-CORE’s comprehensive website at www.raycore.comIf you would like more information, request a contact by clicking the green button on the right of your screen or pick up the phone and call 1.877.552.2440 to speak with a RAY-CORE expert.

Structural Insulated Panels and the Maximus Tiny House

Structural Insulated Panels for Tiny Houses

RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels were the perfect solution for Stew MacInnes’ self-contained living units sometimes referred to as Tiny Houses.

SIP Panels by RAYCORE and Maximus Living Solutions

With more than twenty years in the real estate industry as a broker, Stew served as the branch New Homes director for what was at that time the second largest Coldwell Banker franchise in the US.   Two decades later, Stew found himself assessing the needs of field workers involved in domestic energy exploration and found housing to be a real challenge.  Workers disliked living in the “man-camp” type of dwelling and they were looking for something better.  Needing housing that could easily be moved from one jobsite to another, these workers were looking for something self-contained, that could meet the extreme weather conditions while keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and that would be aesthetically pleasing – a place that they could call “home”.

RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels Fit the Bill

Stew went to the drawing board and drafted a unique design of “tiny house” that would meet those specific needs.  It all starts with the exterior structure.  Stew was looking for something lightweight, strong, easy to use and super-insulating.   RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels for the floors, walls and roof system fit the bill perfectly.

Lightweight – Stew’s 28’ mobile units needed to be light enough to tow down the highway behind a standard pickup truck.  RAY-CORE’s polyurethane foam core structural insulated panels are just that.  A 2×4 thickness 4 foot x 8 foot panel is so lightweight it is easily handled by one man, weighing in at only 43 pounds!

Structural Insulated Panels by RAY-CORE

RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels – Lightweight, Strong, Easy to Use, Super Insulating and Affordable

Strong – These 28’ structures needed to be able to withstand the flexing and bumps as they travels down the highway.   With integrated studs, RAY-CORE SIPs Panels are 4 times stronger than a conventional 2×4 framed wall… so strong that you could park a semi-truck on top of a 4×8 panel!Easy to Use – If you can swing hammer, you can build with RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels.

Super-Insulating – Extreme Living Solutions are achieved with RAY-CORE’s super insulating polyurethane foam and integrated radiant vapor barrier.  Offering the highest insulation value per inch of any insulating foam material, at over an amazing R-7 per inch, RAY-CORE SIP panels are the leader in energy saving building solutions.

Affordable – In the end, Stew knew that cost would be the deciding factor, and the overall cost and affordability made RAY-CORE Structural Insulated Panels a no-brainer.

RAY-CORE’s SIP Panels Divide Them From the Rest!

Stew enthusiastically sites RAY-CORE SIPs as what divides Maximus Living Solutions from other products out there.  “This has definitely given us the ability to differentiate us from any other company!”  “John (with RAY-CORE) has been fabulous to work with… I can’t say enough good things about him.  The service the company gives, their willingness to work with the customer and to offer custom solutions to meet the customer’s needs makes working with RAY-CORE a rewarding experience!”
